CNC Router vs Laser Cutting: What's the Difference, and Which Do You Need?
CNC router cutting and laser cutting both start the same way — a digital file, a sheet of material, and a machine that follows the file precisely. What happens at the cutting edge is completely different, and it shows in the result.
A CNC router uses a rotating bit, physically removing material as it moves through the sheet. It handles thicker, denser material well — most acrylic, MDF, and ACP signage work goes through the router — and it's genuinely fast on larger pieces. The trade-off is edge finish: a router-cut edge is clean but has a slight texture, and on acrylic specifically, it needs a separate polishing step, either flame polishing or sanding, to get a fully glass-smooth look.
A laser uses a focused beam that melts or vaporises material along the cut line rather than physically grinding through it. This lets it follow much finer detail than a router bit can manage — sharp inside corners, thin connecting lines in a lattice pattern, delicate letterforms — without the material chipping. On acrylic, the beam also seals the edge as it cuts, so the piece comes out polished with no extra step. The trade-off is thickness and speed: laser cutting slows down on thick or dense material, and some materials, particularly wood-based ones like MDF, can scorch slightly along the edge.
In practice, the choice usually makes itself once you look at the design: bold, simple shapes in thicker material go to the router; small, intricate, or fine-detail work goes to the laser.
